Interested candidates had to obtain a minimum of 25 signatures on their petition.
On Friday, August 28, the borough held the ballot drawing for the open Spotswood Borough Council seats for the upcoming 2026 general election. The results of the ballot drawing dictate the position of the candidates' names on the election ballot for Spotswood voters. Friday's results were as follows:

SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Excitement was high on Tuesday evening as Spotswood High School football and cheer programs took the field at Chargers Stadium ahead of Thursday's season opener against Monmouth Regional High School. Spotswood High School's cheer squad debuted their new game routine for fans and families while the football team was introduced by Spotswood High School Head Coach Andy Steinfeld.
The upcoming football is the first for Steinfeld as head coach, who served as a volunteer coach last season. He is the program's 10th head coach. Tuesday marked his inaugural pep rally as the Chargers head coach.
Tuesday's pep rally featured pizza as well as ice cream from Scoop to My Lou. There was music by DJ Wacky Wayne and plenty of Chargers' merch for sale to help get students and families ready for the upcoming fall athletic season, which kicks off on Thursday with the varsity football team. Spotswood High School's other fall sports teams, including girls and boys soccer and girls tennis, get going next week. The Chargers boys and girls cross-country schedule has not been posted yet.

The weather cooperated nicely with pleasant temperatures for the evening's festivities. Steinfeld announced each player individually by number order. Each player received their game jersey in preparation for Thursday's season opener. Then, it was time for pizza and ice cream before players, families and fans headed home. Bolt, Spotswood High School's mascot, was on hand to help get Chargers fans excited about the upcoming fall sports season.
Unfortunately, Chargers Stadium's new scoreboard will not be available for Thursday's season opener, Spotswood School District Superintendent Jeffrey Bicsko said during his Superintendent's Report at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting that the scoreboard should be in place for the Chargers girls varsity soccer season opener on Tuesday.
The Chargers varsity football team takes the field against Monmouth Regional High School on Thursday at 7 p.m. for an out-of-conference matchup. Spotswood returns to the Big Central Conference this season, but are moving up from the Freedom Gold Division, where Spotswood won three straight titles, to the Patriot Silver Division. The Patriot Silver Division also includes Arthur Johnson, Metuchen, New Providence, Perth Amboy and Roselle High Schools.
Chargers football passes are available for home games for the upcoming season on Hudl. Tickets are also available for the season opener at Chargers Stadium on August 27 on Hudl. Chargers fans can also buy tickets at the gate on game nights.

Alumni range from graduation years in the 80s to the Class of 2026. Current Chargers were also able to play in the game. The event is made possible by dedicated volunteers, including Maureen Barlow, whose husband and sons play every summer.
This summer, the Lavelle family made a special donation to the Chargers soccer program to honor the memory of their father, John. John Lavalle passed away in July 2024. He was an avid Chargers fan along with his wife, Kathy.
“Four of the Lavelle children played soccer for Spotswood while John and his wife, Kathy, spent many years on the sidelines cheering for the Chargers,” Barlow said.
The donation meant a great deal to Spotswood High School Boys Head Soccer Coach Jeff Marvinny and Chargers Girls Head Soccer Coach Michael Reid.
“We are deeply thankful for the generous donation made by the Lavelle family and will always be grateful for their continued support,” Reid said. “Over the years, many Lavelle family players have come through our program, and we look forward to welcoming even more in the future. Their family has been a valued part of our program, and we truly appreciate everything they have contributed to our players and community.”
“I have known them (the Lavelle's) since I became the head coach here in Spotswood,” Marvinny said. “I coached Matt my first two years in the program. He was a great kid who worked so hard. He was one of the most tactically intelligent players I coached at the time. He contributed to our first division title.”
“This donation helps move us so much closer to our goal of getting bench shelters for the program,” Marvinny continued. “It means so much because, over the years, John had done so much for both the boys and girls soccer teams at the high school. John was a constant at games. He coached many of my players during the club season. He had a lasting impact on the entire soccer community in Spotswood and this just continues the Lavelle family's support of our programs.”
Both Reid and Marvinny look forward to the annual summer alumni game, which takes place just a couple of weeks before it's time to hit the pitch in anticipation of the upcoming fall soccer season.
“I enjoy seeing players who I remember riding their bikes to practices to now having families and careers is one of my favorite things,” Marvinny said of the annual alumni game. “I love the way players who didn't play at the same time in high school come together and share stories and memories. It makes me so happy that this school, this community, and this sport has brought so much joy to so many people.”
“It is great to see players from the past return, share their stories, and connect with current players,” Reid said. “Old traditions meet new traditions as players from different graduating years and decades come together to play on the same team or compete against one another.”
Former and current Chargers soccer parents work during the rest of the year to make this game happen each summer. Their dedication and commitment is not lost on Reid and Marvinny.
“This day would not be possible without the help of Mrs. Barlow and all of the other parents who volunteer their time and efforts to organize this event,” Marvinny said. “Parents whose kids have graduated yet still give their time to make this special day speaks volumes to the community everyone involved in Spotswood Soccer has helped build. I cannot thank them all enough.”
The annual August alumni game is a fundraiser for the Spotswood High School boys and girls soccer programs. If any former Chargers soccer players or current ones missed out on this year's game, don't worry. There will be another one next August. Keep an eye out on social media for signups, which typically start in June.
“We look forward to continuing this tradition, building on its history and expanding it for future generations of players,” Reid added.

This was the Milltown Recreation Department's second outdoor market featuring local vendors. The first one was held on August 8 and, despite the heat, also had a great turnout.
A steady stream of shoppers walked or drove to borough park to check out the August 22 market that featured Cinnaholic, Kale and Clovers, Bella Bianca, Popcorn for the People, PickleLicious, Maple Magic Confectionary, Piney's Farm, Dusals and Milk and Honey Coffee. The second Milltown Market had two additional vendors and the Milltown Recreation Department is hoping to add more for the next one on Saturday, September 5.
“It was a success,” Milltown Recreation Department volunteer Cat Satterthwaite said of the new Milltown Market series.

Satterthwaite went on the say that at the first-ever Milltown Market she offered to help Maple Magic Confectionery because they were so busy. She added that the sweet treats were pretty much gone by the conclusion of the three-hour market and that Piney's Farm and Kale and Clovers also sold out.
Jessica Caccio, the owner and designer of Kale and Clovers Flower Design, mostly does events and weddings, but was excited to bring her fresh flowers to the Milltown Market. Shoppers could make up their own flower bouquets in a mason jar or a basket. Milk and Honey Coffee, a mobile coffee trailer, had a line of customers waiting to savor their organic coffees. All the participating vendors at the Milltown Market are either from Milltown or nearby New Jersey communities.
The Milltown Market has additional dates coming up on Saturday, September 5, Saturday, September 19 and Saturday, October 3 from 9 a.m. until noon at Gloria Bradford Borough Park, which is located at 80 Violet Terrace.
