“You don’t realize how much the Knights do,” Gibbs said, explaining some of their latest initiatives, including delivering 3000 Thanksgiving turkeys to families in need in two days, collecting 700 coats for the needy, serving 400 breakfasts to CCD students, collecting and donating 60 boxes of food and $600 for the food pantry,” Gibbs said.
“It was such an honor to be invited to attend this ceremony for us to represent the council. This is one of the hardest working organizations at helping people and giving to those in need,” Sparta Township Council member Marjy Murphy said. “They jumped to get trucks of food to the states that were destroyed by storms as well as local groups in need. I am so honored to know many of these gentlemen and have worked with them.”
Smith said, “The core mission of the Knights of Columbus is to empower Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work, and in their community. Founded in 1882 by Fr. Michael J. McGivney, the organization seeks to protect families, provide mutual aid, and support local charitable needs.”
Marquette Council 588 is a local council supporting the parish communities: Our Lady of the Lake Church in Sparta, St Thomas of Aquin Church in Ogdensburg and Immaculate Conception Church in Franklin. Chartered in 1901, Marquette Council 588 is celebrating its 125th Anniversary supporting parish communities, and larger town, county, state, and national communities, according to Smith.
