The mission of the Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance, also known as BoroAWARE, is to change and save lives by empowering the community to help manage and deter substance abuse and related issues through education, awareness, resource deployment, and advocacy.
The proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, overdose affects everyone from grieving families to first responders; and
WHEREAS, the estimated number of people using opioids globally was approximately 61.3 million in 2023; and
WHEREAS, there were nearly 80,400 reported drug overdose deaths in 2024, and approximately half involved synthetic opioids; and
WHEREAS, Overdose Awareness Day aims to increase awareness of evidence-based strategies and tools that can help prevent overdoses; and
WHEREAS, Naloxone/Narcan distribution programs can save lives by reversing the effects of an opioid overdose; and
WHEREAS, the Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance has made Narcan available to all Hillsborough residents by installing and maintaining a Narcan distribution box in the Municipal Building. The Narcan is free of charge to anyone in need. The Narcan Box was purchased with Opioid Settlement money, and the committee will work to determine other possible locations in the community to place additional Narcan boxes; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Hillsborough/Millstone Municipal Alliance, also known as BoroAWARE, is to change and save lives by empowering the community to help manage and deter substance abuse and related issues through education, awareness, resource deployment, and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, the Municipal Alliance is working to prevent overdose deaths utilizing a strategy of educating the community about Narcan and getting Narcan into everyone's medicine cabinet.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that we, the Mayor and Hillsborough Township Committee, hereby recognize August as Overdose Awareness Month and August 31, 2025 as Overdose Awareness Day and vow to continue to support programs committed to preventing overdose deaths.
